The following day Lisa went shopping; all that was on her mind was looking good on Saturday night. Nearly five hours later she arrived back at the flat, pleased with her purchases; the outfit she had chosen would have turned heads anywhere, let alone in Korky’s wine bar. She had a hair appointment booked for Saturday morning; her plans were to make one hell of a first impression. On Saturday evening Lisa left the flat and took a slow walk down to Korky’s, arriving with five minutes to spare. Looking through the front windows she could see that all the lights were on but there was no sign of activity. Pushing the door open she went in.

‘Hi Lisa,’ came a voice from behind the bar. Hearing the door open, Angie stood up from restocking the bottled beers, ‘nice to see you’re on time. We’re going to be a bit short-staffed tonight and it’s going to get busy.’

‘Is there somewhere to put my coat?’ asked Lisa.

‘I’ll show you around. Sue will be in about seven, the other girls, Alex and Zoë, are both sick with some stomach bug. I tell you, it’s all I need on a Saturday night.’ Angie showed Lisa around the wine bar. ‘Right Lisa, put your coat in the staffroom and I’ll get the place opened up.’

‘OK,’ replied Lisa. Lisa hung up her coat; there was a full-length mirror on the back of the staff room door, another of Angie’s attention to detail ideas. Lisa looked herself up and down, briefly turning to the side, ‘I hope this isn’t too short,’ she said to herself. Quickly, she walked down the narrow corridor into the bar. As she walked in Angie was racking some bottles of wine in a cooler compartment. Suddenly, Angie’s eye caught Lisa, she turned, ‘Very nice,’ she said, approvingly; Lisa blushed, ‘you’re going to be good for business young lady, and very popular as well, if I may add.’

‘I don’t know about that,’ said Lisa. The door opened and Sue came in.

‘Hi Sue,’ called Angie. Sue was a very quiet lady; also in her mid-thirties, light brown hair with a round but very pretty face, very self-conscious of the constant battle to keep her weight in check. The wine bar job was just a bit of pin money for her. Her husband was a long-distance lorry driver, so he was away most nights. She had two kids in their middle teens, both of them out most nights, so she had taken the job to get herself out of the house. It had started as a couple of nights a week, but Angie had slowly and cleverly pressured her to work virtually seven nights a week.

‘Hi Angie,’ replied Sue, looking over at Lisa, ‘Lisa isn’t it?’

‘Yeah,’ Lisa replied, ‘nice to meet you again.’ They smiled at each other. It wasn’t long before customers started arriving. Wine, shots, bubbly and generous tips; it was clear to Lisa that Korky’s attracted affluent customers. By nine o’clock there wasn’t a free table in the bar.
